An interest group called the U.S. PIRG Higher Education Project wants to make higher education affordable. They are working to keep loans affordable, increase grant aid to students, and make textbooks affordable. This group was formed because higher education in America is very important to both individual success and the social and economic prosperity of our country. More and more students are taking out loans to help pay for their schooling, with the average person graduating with over $26,000 in debt. The high amount of stress that goes along with paying for college takes away from the experience and is counterproductive to the goals of higher education. Some of the directors of the U.S. PIRG projects include Andre Delattre (Executive Director), Steve Blackledge (Public Health Program Director), Allison Cairo (Regional Director), and Ed Mierzwinski (Federal Consumer Program Director). The director of the Higher Education Director is Chris Lindstrom. The U.S. PIRG project has many other sectors as well, including 21st century transportation, avoiding dangerous toys, campaigns for safe energy, consumer protection, and many more.

The public policy that I have chosen is the Education Policy, CS/CS/SB 1720. It requires Florida College System institutions to implement developmental education, revises postsecondary general education requirements, and revises a number of statues to improve accountability in K-12 and post secondary education. The U.S. PIRG special interest group for affordable higher education would be in favor of this public policy because it provides financial aid to those college students who needs it. Because the interest group is focused on making higher education affordable, they would be in favor of any bill or public policy that supported that and made financial aid readily available.
